Speech therapy can help reduce child’s frustration from not being understood, and help him or her transition smoothly through the preschool and Department of Education system. Disorders evaluated and treated include:
Language delays can affect a child’s ability to understand instructions (receptive language) or express thoughts clearly (expressive language).
Children with ASD may experience challenges in social communication, interaction, and language use
Apraxia is a motor planning disorder in which children have difficulty coordinating the movements needed for speech.
PVFM is a condition in which the vocal folds close improperly during breathing, leading to breathing difficulty or noisy inhalation.
Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder caused by weakness or poor coordination of the muscles used for speaking.
Fluency disorders affect the smooth flow of speech. Children may repeat sounds, prolong words, speak rapidly, or struggle to organize their thoughts while speaking.
Voice disorders in children may present as hoarseness, breathiness, strained voice, or inappropriate pitch. We provide therapy to promote healthy vocal habits, improve vocal quality, and reduce strain or misuse of the voice.
Children with articulation delays have difficulty producing certain speech sounds correctly, which may make their speech hard to understand.
We offer thorough evaluations for children ages 12 months to 18 years of age. Evaluations are coordinated with parents and teachers to determine an overall picture of the child’s function in daily living and school settings. We conduct evaluations by obtaining parent interviews, formal (standardized) tests, as well as informal tasks. We will determine if speech/language treatment is recommended and advise as to the frequency (weekly or biweekly) and duration that we expect these sessions to last.
Oral/Rigid Stroboscopy is used to visually evaluate how the vocal folds are vibrating. This important instrument gives us a close up view of the structures inside and around the larynx to better assess the cause of the vocal impairment, as well as to chart progress. This procedure is conveniently offered in the office.
Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS) is considered the gold-standard procedure in assessing swallowing function. These diagnostic tests are conducted in the Radiology Department at Mt. Sinai West.
